FAQ
Quick notes about estimates and why a dealer’s quote can differ.
Does this include sales tax?
Yes. This calculator estimates sales tax on the taxable amount (vehicle price minus trade-in) and adds it to the amount financed. Title, registration, documentation fees, and extended warranties are not included. Local tax rules can differ — some jurisdictions tax the full price or limit trade-in credits.
How does trade-in value affect my loan?
Trade-in value reduces what you still owe on the car and, in this estimate, also reduces the amount that is taxed. A larger trade-in typically means a smaller loan, a lower monthly payment, and less interest over the term. If you still owe money on the trade-in, that payoff is not modeled here.
What’s a typical auto loan APR?
Auto APRs move with credit score, new vs. used, loan term, and lender. Well-qualified buyers on new cars often see rates in the high-single digits; used cars and longer terms are usually higher. The 7.5% default is a planning example, not a quote.
Should I choose a longer or shorter term?
A 36- or 48-month term usually costs less in interest but raises the monthly payment. A 72-month term can make the payment look affordable while increasing total interest and the chance of being “upside down” if the car depreciates faster than you pay it down. Compare both the monthly payment and total cost.
