How it works

A countdown subtracts the current date and time from a future target date and time. The remaining milliseconds are then converted into days, hours, minutes, and seconds.

Basic countdown formula
target time − current time

milliseconds → days, hours, minutes, seconds

Why can countdowns differ by device?

Because the countdown uses the local date and time on the device viewing the page.

What happens when the target time passes?

You can either show time since the target passed, or clamp the countdown to zero.
